I know from personal experience how isolating and overwhelming it can be to navigate the world as a disabled person. The added complexities of advocating for yourself, understanding the bureaucratic processes, and figuring out the steps involved in receiving the accommodations and financial support you rightfully deserve can be incredibly exhausting.
My job is to provide comprehensive support to you as you navigate the various processes involved in applying for BC disability assistance (PWD), the Canada-wide disability tax credit (DTC), or the accommodations you need for school or work. This includes helping you fully understand what is required of you, gather and create the necessary documentation, and ensure that everything is completed accurately and efficiently.
BC Person with Disabilities (PWD) Designation
You can find more general information about the application itself and the application process though my helpful guide for low-income folks.
As a Registered Social Worker, I am recognized as a “Prescribed Professional” by the BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, which administers disability assistance. This designation means that I have the necessary qualifications and expertise to assess and document your mental health and neurodevelopmental needs accurately.
As part of my role, I am qualified to complete Section 3 — Assessor Report. This report highlights your current mental health struggles, the extent of your neurodevelopmental disability, and goes over what type of support you may require. The information in this report is used to determine your eligibility for assistance and may help ensure that you receive the appropriate resources and accommodations.
In addition to completing the report, I can provide you with a letter of support to take to your healthcare provider. This documentation is designed to assist your family doctor, nurse practitioner, or psychiatrist in understanding your mental health and neurodevelopmental struggles and get the necessary information they need to complete their part of the form. Feedback from clients indicates that having this letter of support helps to simplify and streamline the overall application process, especially if you currently lack a specific diagnosis.
Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
You can find more information about the credit here.
In helping you apply for the Disability Tax Credit, I will create a comprehensive letter of support to take to your healthcare provider. In this document, I will create a detailed overview of your current neurodevelopmental support needs, ongoing mental health challenges, and the accommodations that you require to enhance your daily life. This letter will not only talk about the impairments (DTC language) that affect you, but will provide detailed examples of how these impairments affect every aspect of your functioning. This may help greatly increase your chances of receiving the credit.
Typically, it takes me 2-3 sessions to conduct a thorough assessment and produce a detailed letter. While it might be an initial investment, you will find that my services offer excellent financial value compared to the cost of similar services offered by specialized providers.
Accommodations for school or work
I can assist you in advocating for essential accommodations at your school or workplace. This service includes writing comprehensive support letters that detail your challenges and the specific accommodations you require, completing formal requests for employment accommodations, and corresponding with human resources departments or accessibility centres regarding your case. Additionally, I can help by conducting a series of psychological and neurodevelopmental assessments as needed to support your accommodation requests. The cost of this service varies based on the specific tasks and the level of support required. In the case of employment accommodations, it can also be partially or fully covered by your employer.
If you have any other questions or would like to get more information about the disability support I provide, please email me.
